Why Resume Summary is Important

We all know why we shouldn’t write objectives in our resume, objectives are utterly redundant. We know why you are applying for the position, to get it right?

Now let’s look at why your summary could say more about your application and why it is more important than an objective.

Resume summary should have the following outline:

1. It should say clearly to your prospective employer that you’re qualified for the available position. It should have the keywords that your employer is looking for specially for big companies where they could use a filtering program to rank relevant applications.

2. It should say what you can do for the company if you’re hired, not just any promises.

3. It should get your hiring manager’s attention in short period of time and tell everything about you.

Summary Details

1. You should never use the “I” statement, this also applies to any part of your resume. When you say “I’m a qualified Manager” it doesn’t prove anything and you could sound you’re just saying it. When you describe yourself it has to be subtle and with support. Let’s look at this description “Multiple award winning market analysis with more than 10 years of specialization in Analysing Product Market, Public Relation, Media and Online Marketing.

Notice how I managed to say 3 specific keywords from the employer and at the same time telling them that I’m willing to stretch my job description to exceed my employer’s expectation thus the award I got from them and keeping my description concise and powerful. It is very important to fit your qualifications to your employer’s need, you have to be sure that these keywords are in your summary since it’s the first phrase that the hiring managers would skim. And the best part, you have more sentences to get your hiring manager’s attention.

2. Your employer should have a clear picture what you can do for them. You just can’t say “I want the position posted as an Executive Assistant with XYZ Corp.” Rather, you should concentrate on what you can do for them, and your qualification should be relevant to your employer’s need. If you have myriad of industry say from Marketing, Healthcare, and IT, you don’t have to say all of these unless it adds up to the position you’re applying – for example, you’re trying to land a position with a Marketing company as an online IT specialist. So normally you should know your industry and build it up from there. Don’t bother wasting your space and energy trying to say everything you did.

3. Your resume summary should get your hiring manager’s attention in 3 – 5 sentences. Now how to write a resume summary that can do this without taking away your quality. A good start is to use your action word once only, just like any part of your resume. You have to use the company’s keywords. And use figures when you could, this says a lot about your working ethics and achievement.

If you already work fulltime, chances are you don’t have a lot of time to devote to learning new skills, or updating your old skills. While learning something new can take some additional time and effort, it is usually worthwhile to add some new skills to your resume, and to increase your value to your current employer. Following are 5 reasons you should consider adding additional skills to your repertoire, or retraining to learn something new:

1. Add to your existing skill set. If you are already employed, adding to your existing skills can make you more valuable to your employer. Not only will the additional skills you learn make it likely that you can take on more responsibilities at work, retraining shows that you are constantly evolving and improving as an employee. You can also point out any retraining that you have done when it is time to review your performance. You may be able to justify a raise if you have added significant skills or certifications to your resume.

2. Train for a new job altogether. Whether you simply dislike the career or position you are in, or you are working in an industry that is in decline, you may wish or need to seek additional opportunities. Retraining for a separate career will allow you to learn something new, and allow you to apply for and be qualified to perform a different set of jobs. If you are in an industry that is declining or changing, chances are you will be competing against others from your same field for the same jobs, and retraining can give you an additional advantage.

3. Keep up to date on the latest technology. If you have been out of school for three, five, or even ten years, technology has changed substantially since you graduated. You may need to attend a program or take a course to catch up a bit. By being on top of the latest technology and techniques, you can be sure that you are not missing out on anything. If you work for an employer, they will appreciate you upgrading your skills-and may even pay for the training itself.

4. If you have been laid off, or let go from your last position. Look at a layoff or termination as an opportunity. If you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits, you can use some of your down time to retrain for a new position. It is easy to get stuck in a job, simply because you are accustomed to it. Getting laid off or terminated can give you the push you need to try something new.

5. You sense a layoff is coming. If you are in a declining industry or many employees from your company have been laid off, be proactive and start retraining now. If you do not end up getting laud off, you will have increased your skills, and will benefit from the new training. If you do end up getting laid off, then you will have a significant head start on finding another job.

Freelance work is best for anyone preferring to work from home but is on a tight budget and unable to start his or her own business. It not only allows the person the flexibility which an employee cannot have but also allows him or her to get paid without having to promote products. Instead he or she gets paid for every assignment completed and delivered to the client’s expectations.

There are many types of freelance work available out in the market. Such as advertisers, article writers, audio or video producers, bloggers, copywriters, customer services, editors, graphic designers programmers, outbound researchers, telemarketers, translators and web designers.

In order to perform well, you need to have a certain set of skills and knowledge before taking on any freelance job. You also have to convince the client why he or she should hire you over others. Most importantly, you need to do a through and precise job in order to get paid. Those qualities are also the rice bowls of freelance work.

There are 3 ways to get freelance work. The first way is to advertise yourself in magazines, newspapers or online classified ad sites. The second way is to go to forums and look for a specific niche catered for freelancers. Last but not least, you can go to freelance marketplaces like Elance and Guru to showcase what you are good in.

To be realistic, freelance work is highly competitive as with any other jobs. But so long as you can stand out by branding yourself to your client, you should have no problem getting hired. If you are able to deliver and your employer is happy with you, he or she will outsource more work to you. And more work done means more pay for you!

Freelance work not require you to complete every assignment to client’s expectations but to be able to meet deadlines too. If for any reason you are unable to, it is best to inform the client beforehand. This is better than just accepting the assignment for the sake of getting paid but ended up not able to complete the work on time. In this case, it is better to be frank than to misrepresent and give client a bad impression because of your incapacity to cope.

In a way freelance work strikes a fine balance between an employee and entrepreneur. In fact it is the best job anyone can ask for. You do not need to get up very early and into traffic rush hour just to be in office on time. You only need to go to office occasionally to get work or to get paid. You also do not need to do sales or meet targets.

Apart from home, how do you like to work freelance online as well?

There are many different ways to do freelance online. Yet most internet marketers are unable to do everything. Article marketing, blogging, classified advertising, domain registration and confirmation, email marketing, forum posting, Google keyword research, hosting, PPC advertising, social bookmarking, video marketing etc.

About the Author: There are many methods to market online. Therefore the internet marketers may not be able to handle everything but need assistance from freelancers time to time. Learn how you can help them easily here.

Cruise through your career irrespective of the economy.

One’s career can be compared to driving in a pot holed road. Any careful driver takes adequate precautions while traversing the road. The motorist has to make sure that damage to the vehicle as well as the occupants is minimized. Every successful professional likewise makes sure that he or she manoeuvres the career journey in a similar manner. There are always going to be similar potholes strewn in the career road. The challenge is to be alert, detect these potholes on time and steer one’s career around these obstacles. There would also be smooth stretches of road when one could be speeding along only to be confronted by a policeman issuing a ticket for over speeding. It is all about alertness and it is therefore important that one does not ever take things easy.

Nothing is a constant in life and one has to have the foresight to always expect change, much of which can be nasty many times. How does one surmount them and come out unscathed? How does one find the energy and guile to take on the office politicians? How does one just stand out in the corporate jungle? How does one plan a career that is ultimately fulfilling? One may have the most coveted job and yet he or she may not be happy.

Once the basics are established the career counselling coach will develop a resume to better reflect the next step in the career path. A lot of what we do in our working lives leaves us feeling at the mercy of a boss, a schedule and the economy. Sure, we’d like to go on a vacation in June but that’s end of financial year and there’s so much to do, we’d love to take an overseas trip but perhaps the household budget can’t stretch that far. It starts to feel as though we have very little choice about anything at all and it makes for a pretty miserable working life.

The great news is that most of it is all in our heads. You do have the power to change your career, and it isn’t really even that hard.

Making the decision… to make the change
The hardest part is deciding that you want more; or just something else. Giving yourself permission to become the best, most successful and fulfilled person you can be actually takes a lot of soul searching as many of us are trained over time not to expect too much. We need to turn that thinking around and regain control. With a sense of control comes confidence and optimism, all excellent ingredients for success.

Preparing for action
Jumping out into the unknown is a bit too confronting for most people to take on all at once. The trick is to acclimatize you to the idea before the big jumping off happens. If you plan it well, it should feel more like an exciting, slightly nerve-wracking ‘big step’ rather than a hideously frightening sky dive.

Read up on your chosen path, look out of the pitfalls and work out in advance how to overcome them. Remove all obstacles which may encourage you to scurry back to your safety zone.

Pre-flight and taking off
Well you can plan and plan forever and ever… it’s necessary but can become a crutch. At some point, the plan must be enacted. Before you force yourself to take that scary leap and change your career you need to line up a support network; people who believe in you and will support your decision and offer reassurance. Also take the time to remind yourself why you are making this change and if you feel you need it, find a few inspirational quotes, anecdotes or images which can serve as touchstones when you’re feeling nervous or just a bit low.

With all that in place, you are ready to change your career. It might take a little while to show signs of movement, but once the change is beginning to blossom it can all happen very fast. Stay alert to the opportunities that come your way, remain focused and chase down your dreams.

It’s easy to remain trapped in a job you don’t like, and even an entire life you don’t like. Passive acceptance of unfavourable circumstances may be easier, but it doesn’t carry the same quality of life as taking charge and creating your own opportunities. Even if you decide that your dream is to not work; that’s a goal you can move towards. It just takes some time, effort and courage.

A stressful work environment can cause a lot of emotional and mental problems amongst employees. Since most people spend half of their day at their place of employment, it is important that they feel comfortable and stress free as much as possible. There are a ton of reasons why a work environment can be made difficult; such as unfair employee practices, co-worker and boss harassment and working in unsafe areas. The first thing that many workers want to do when deciding on whether they should leave a difficult work environment is to quit. Unfortunately, most people don’t have the luxury of doing this because of the current economic recession. Jobs are not as plentiful as they once were years ago.

There are many options to consider before quitting a job. If the issue is unfair employee practices (which could include cheating employees out of their earnings or making them work odd hours against their will), the employee should first see if there is a union which handles these sort of problems. Depending on the worker’s profession, there are a ton of unions that fight for fairness amongst workers. Workers such as Nurses and other healthcare professionals have access to a ton of unions. There are also associations on the government level that deals with employee wages.

If the difficult work environment is due to harassment from a co-worker, the employee should first try to use effective communication skills with the other co-worker they are in conflict with. If nothing happens, it may be necessary to alert the boss and/or supervisor of exactly what is going on. Sexual harassment should also be handled the same way. If effective communication does not work, alerting the owner or manager is essential to solving the problem.

If all of these techniques do not get the employee anywhere and their working conditions do not approve, they should seek assistance from the authorities. This would include law enforcement. Only after considering all avenues and techniques (and if the stressful work environment still continues), it may be a good idea to seek another place of employment. The employee should give themselves enough time to find another place of employment.
